Fast fashion might be cheap, but it comes with an environmental and social cost. The European Commission’s 2020 “European Social Innovation Competition” gives young entrepreneurs the chance to pitch ideas to radically change the fashion industry towards increased sustainability.

The way that our clothes are put together is a huge part of fashion’s problem. The massive quantities of clothes sewn by workers at garment factories come at huge human cost; and the fabrics used draw on earth’s resources without giving anything back. This year’s applicants have looked at how clothes can fit better into a lifecycle that is circular rather than linear – that can be part of a regenerative, rather than a destructive process.
